Description
Colletotrichum roseum is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing anthracnose, a destructive plant disease characterized by tissue necrosis and significant yield loss. This fungus thrives by colonizing plant tissues and extracting nutrients, which severely weakens the host plant and reduces its overall vigor.
The host range of this pathogen is extensive, encompassing a wide variety of fruit trees, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It can attack every part of the plant, including leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, often causing pre-harvest and post-harvest losses that significantly degrade the economic value of the produce.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, circular or irregular dark-colored spots that become sunken over time. In highly humid conditions, the fungal structures, known as acervuli, develop within these lesions, often producing spore masses. If left unchecked, these lesions can coalesce, leading to extensive tissue death and leaf drop.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity, rainfall, and moderate to warm temperatures. Dissemination of the pathogen occurs through wind-driven rain, irrigation water, contaminated tools, and infected plant debris, which acts as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.
Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize infection risk. This includes planting resistant cultivars, maintaining good field sanitation to remove debris, and implementing proper spacing to improve air circulation. Regular scouting and the timely application of fungicides are essential to suppress the spread of the disease during favorable infection periods.
