The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Colletotrichum salsolae, belonging to the genus Colletotrichum. It is a specialized fungal pathogen known to cause anthracnose primarily on species within the Salsola genus. Due to its narrow host range and effectiveness in suppressing host growth, it has been studied as a potential biological control agent for managing problematic weed populations.
The disease primarily affects the aerial parts of the host plant, specifically the stems and leaves. The development of necrotic lesions is the hallmark symptom, which may eventually coalesce and result in the collapse of the plant structure. These lesions act as sites for the formation of acervuli, small fruiting bodies containing masses of conidia, which are essential for the dissemination of the fungus.
Early signs of infection appear as chlorotic spots that transition into dark brown or black necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, the integrity of the stem tissue is compromised, leading to significant chlorosis, necrosis, and eventual plant death. Under conditions of high humidity, visible spore masses may be observed on the surface of the lesions.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Colletotrichum salsolae. High relative humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures are essential for spore germination and infection establishment. Water splashing serves as a primary mechanism for the dispersal of conidia from infected plants to neighboring healthy hosts in the vicinity.
The damage caused by the pathogen manifests as reduced biomass, impaired reproductive capability, and mortality of the host plant. In the context of weed management, the goal is to favor the spread of this pathogen within weed populations. Preventive measures involve avoiding the movement of contaminated plant debris to prevent the accidental introduction of the fungus into non-target areas.
