Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum sansevieriae, a specific agent that targets various Sansevieria species. This fungus belongs to the group of deuteromycetes and is known for its ability to cause rapid tissue necrosis. Understanding the biology of this pathogen is crucial for maintaining the health of Sansevieria collections worldwide.

The primary hosts are plants belonging to the Sansevieria genus. While they are generally hardy, this fungus specifically exploits the succulent nature of their leaves. Under favorable conditions, the infection can spread quickly, moving from a single leaf to an entire plant, often leading to rapid decline in both aesthetic and structural integrity.

Symptoms typically start as small, water-soaked lesions on the leaf surface. As the fungus colonizes the leaf tissue, these spots expand, often turning dark brown or black with a distinct margin. In many cases, the center of the spot develops small, raised black structures known as acervuli, which produce masses of conidiospores, serving as the primary source of secondary infection.

Environmental factors play a critical role in the outbreak of Colletotrichum sansevieriae. The fungus thrives in high humidity, poor air circulation, and warm temperatures, typically ranging between 20°C and 28°C. Frequent overhead watering or condensation left on foliage provides the necessary liquid film for spore germination and infection, making greenhouse environments particularly risky.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Cultural practices involve reducing humidity, ensuring adequate spacing for airflow, and avoiding moisture on leaves during watering. If the infection has already set in, pruning away affected leaves and applying appropriate fungicides, such as those containing systemic or contact copper or mancozeb active ingredients, is recommended to contain the spread.
