Description
The fungus Colletotrichum sedi is the causative agent of anthracnose, a severe fungal disease affecting succulent plants. It acts by colonizing plant tissues, leading to cell death and the structural degradation of leaves and stems, which can eventually kill the entire plant if left untreated.
This pathogen primarily targets various species within the Sedum genus. It poses a significant threat to ornamental displays, rock gardens, and succulent nurseries, as the fungus is highly contagious and can spread via water splashes, contaminated tools, or infested plant material.
Early symptoms manifest as small, water-soaked, sunken spots on the foliage. As the disease advances, these spots turn dark brown or black and often show distinct concentric rings. Under humid conditions, small fruiting bodies known as acervuli appear in the center of the lesions, releasing a mass of spores.
Development and spread of Colletotrichum sedi are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity, overhead watering, poor air circulation, and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C are ideal for spore germination and colonization. Wet foliage provides the perfect bridge for the fungus to penetrate healthy tissues.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Gardeners should strictly practice hygiene by pruning affected parts and sanitizing tools. Fungicidal treatments, specifically those containing mancozeb or copper-based compounds, are recommended to protect healthy plants. Ensuring well-drained soil and reducing foliage wetness are critical preventative steps.
