Colletotrichum siamense is a widespread phytopathogenic fungus known as a primary causal agent of anthracnose in a vast array of crops. As a member of the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex, it is recognized for its significant pathogenic variability and its ability to infect both perennial and annual plant species across various climate zones.
The host range of C. siamense is remarkably broad, affecting fruit crops such as apples, mangoes, strawberries, and citrus, as well as various tropical crops like coffee and tea, and numerous ornamental species. It infects tissues through direct penetration of the cuticle, leading to colonization of both vegetative and reproductive plant organs.
Symptomatology typically includes the development of dark, sunken lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. Under high humidity, these lesions become covered in masses of fungal conidia, which are usually pink, orange, or salmon-colored. As the disease progresses, these lesions can expand and coalesce, leading to severe defoliation, blighting, and complete rot of fruits.
Environmental factors are decisive in the epidemiology of this pathogen. Warm, humid conditions are ideal for the production and dispersal of spores. Rainfall and overhead irrigation are primary drivers for splash dispersal of conidia within a canopy, while the pathogen remains dormant during dry or cold seasons within infected plant debris or in the stems of perennial hosts.
Management of Colletotrichum siamense requires a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures include the removal of inoculum sources through sanitation, ensuring optimal plant spacing for better airflow, and strict hygiene practices for tools. Chemically, protective and systemic fungicides are employed, often alternating between different chemical classes to prevent the development of resistance in fungal populations.
