The causal agent of sow thistle anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum sonchicola. It is a highly specialized pathogen that specifically targets members of the Sonchus genus. As a plant pathogen, it invades the tissues of the host, leading to localized necrosis and eventual collapse of the affected plant parts.
The primary host range includes sow thistles, which are common weeds in agricultural settings. Because this fungus selectively attacks these weeds, it has been the subject of research for its potential role in integrated weed management strategies, acting as a natural regulator of Sonchus populations in infested fields.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of dark, sunken lesions on stems and leaf blades. These lesions serve as the site for the development of fungal fruiting bodies, known as acervuli. Under humid conditions, these structures produce masses of conidia, which are often visible as small, pinkish, slimy spots in the center of the necrotic lesions.
The development and spread of Colletotrichum sonchicola are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly moisture and temperature. Optimal infection occurs under warm, humid conditions when leaf surfaces remain wet for extended periods. Spores are primarily disseminated by rain splash, overhead irrigation, and physical contact between plants.
The virulence of this pathogen is demonstrated by the rapid degradation of the host plant's structural integrity. While Colletotrichum sonchicola is not a threat to primary crops, it effectively reduces the vigor and seed production of its weed hosts. Proper management of field sanitation and crop rotation remains the standard practice to avoid the unintended spread of fungal pathogens within the agricultural ecosystem.
