Description
The fungus Colletotrichum spaethianum is a known phytopathogen that causes anthracnose on various ornamental plants, specifically targeting daylilies (Hemerocallis). It is a persistent disease that overwinters on debris or within the soil, allowing the fungus to re-emerge as an active threat during the spring season when temperatures start to rise.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are species and hybrids of daylilies. While it is often considered a specialized pathogen, its ability to thrive on weakened plant tissues makes it a significant concern for nurseries and home gardens. The fungus spreads primarily through conidia, which are easily disseminated by wind, splash irrigation, or contaminated gardening tools.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as brown or dark grey necrotic spots on leaves and flower scapes. These spots are often surrounded by a distinct chlorotic or darker margin. Under humid conditions, the centers of these lesions may develop small, pimple-like structures known as acervuli, which produce masses of spores that are visible as a moist, dark-colored coating.
The development of Colletotrichum spaethianum is heavily dependent on moisture. Prolonged rain, high humidity, and warm temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization of host tissue. Gardens with poor airflow, caused by excessive crowding of plants, are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks, as humidity remains trapped in the foliage canopy for longer periods.
The impact of this disease is primarily aesthetic and physiological, as damaged leaves reduce the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to weaker flowering and diminished overall vigor. If left unmanaged, chronic infections can significantly weaken the daylily crown. Effective disease management programs include:
- sanitizing the garden by removing and disposing of infected plant material;
- maintaining proper spacing between plants to enhance ventilation;
- avoiding overhead watering to keep leaf surfaces dry;
- applying appropriate fungicides at the first sign of symptoms to halt disease progress.
