Description

Tobacco anthracnose is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum tabacum. This disease is a significant threat to tobacco cultivation, impacting both seedling nurseries and field crops. It is characterized by its ability to cause severe tissue damage, often rendering the harvested tobacco leaves commercially unusable due to their poor quality and appearance.

The host range is primarily limited to Nicotiana species. The fungus acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, invading plant tissues and causing rapid cell death. It persists in the environment by surviving on infected plant debris, in the soil, and occasionally on seeds, allowing it to re-emerge at the start of every growing season if proper sanitation is neglected.

Visible symptoms include the development of small, water-soaked, circular to irregular lesions on leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions turn brown to black and may develop a necrotic center. Under high humidity, the characteristic black fruiting bodies (acervuli) appear within the lesions, releasing masses of spores that further infect healthy tissues on the same or adjacent plants.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the disease cycle. The pathogen thrives in warm, humid climates, especially when there is frequent rainfall or overhead irrigation. The spores are primarily dispersed by splashing water and farm equipment. Poor circulation within dense crop stands creates a microclimate that accelerates the spread and germination of the fungus.

Integrated management is essential to minimize losses. This includes using certified pathogen-free seeds, rotating tobacco with non-host crops, and ensuring good field drainage. Chemical control involves the application of protective or systemic fungicides when environmental conditions are conducive to infection. Monitoring the field regularly allows for timely intervention before the disease reaches an epidemic level.
