It is a member of the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex, which makes it a significant concern for global agricultural production. This pathogen is highly adaptable and can compromise plant health at various developmental stages.
This fungus exhibits a broad host range, primarily infecting tropical and subtropical fruit crops such as mango, papaya, and avocado. It can also affect various vegetables and berries. The fungus typically invades the host through epidermal wounds or directly through the cuticle, initiating a destructive colonization of the plant tissues.
Visible symptoms include the development of sunken, dark-colored lesions on leaves, stems, and fruit. Under high humidity conditions, the fungus produces masses of conidia in acervuli, which appear as orange or pinkish gelatinous droplets.
