The causative agent of anthracnose in tamarillo is the fungus Colletotrichum tamarilloi. This pathogen belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and is a significant threat to the production of tamarillo (Solanum betaceum). As a specialized fungal pathogen, it specifically targets the host plant to exploit its nutrients, leading to serious decay of the fruit and branches.
The primary host for this disease is the tamarillo tree. While the fungus can affect various aerial parts of the plant, the most significant damage occurs on ripening fruits. The pathogen's ability to invade healthy tissue makes it a major concern for farmers aiming to achieve high-quality yields in tropical cultivation zones.

Frequent rainfall, high humidity, and warm temperatures facilitate the rapid germination of fungal spores. The disease spreads primarily through water splash and wind, infecting fruits through small wounds, lenticels, or natural openings in the skin.
