Description
Colletotrichum tanaceti is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing anthracnose in various species of plants, primarily within the Tanacetum genus. This fungus is a significant concern for commercial producers of pyrethrum, as it compromises the health and chemical composition of the crop, directly impacting the yield of natural insecticides.
The disease affects all aerial parts of the host plant, including leaves, stems, and flower buds. By invading the vascular and structural tissues of the plant, the fungus disrupts nutrient transport and photosynthesis, which leads to stunted growth, reduced biomass, and lower concentrations of active pyrethrins within the flower heads.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, water-soaked spots that rapidly expand into dark, sunken lesions. Under humid conditions, these spots may develop salmon-colored spore masses, which are the hallmark of Colletotrichum species. Severe infections often cause systemic decay, leading to the lodging of stems and premature senescence of the entire plant.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of the pathogen. High relative humidity and warm temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. Rain splash and wind are the primary mechanisms for the dispersal of conidia within a field, allowing the disease to spread rapidly from initial infection foci.
Management of this disease requires an integrated strategy to minimize inoculum levels. Effective practices include the use of certified pathogen-free seeds, maintaining proper row spacing to ensure adequate air circulation, and the implementation of a rigorous fungicide rotation program. Post-harvest, it is essential to remove or bury crop debris to eliminate potential overwintering sites for the fungus.
