Description
The disease is caused by the phytopathogenic fungus Colletotrichum tebeestii, a specialized agent known for inducing anthracnose in various plants. This pathogen invades host tissues, secreting enzymes that degrade cell walls, allowing it to extract nutrients while simultaneously triggering severe necrotic responses in the plant's vascular and parenchyma tissues.
The primary hosts for Colletotrichum tebeestii are generally grass species, with rice crops being particularly susceptible to its infection. The fungus is highly adaptive and can persist in soil debris or dormant within plant residues, acting as a recurring source of inoculum that threatens the health of subsequent crop cycles if appropriate sanitation is neglected.
Visual symptoms appear as dark, sunken lesions on foliage, stems, and sometimes floral structures. As the disease progresses, these lesions often merge, covering large leaf surfaces.
