Colletotrichum theobromicola is a significant fungal pathogen responsible for anthracnose disease in cocoa plants. This fungus is widely recognized for its impact on production quality and yield, thriving particularly in tropical environments where environmental conditions favor the rapid colonization of plant tissues.
The primary host of this pathogen is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The fungus can infect various organs, including pods, leaves, and twigs. By acting as a hemibiotroph, it first infects living tissues to gain nutrients before causing widespread necrosis, which often results in severe economic losses for agricultural producers.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as small, sunken, dark-colored lesions that gradually expand. As the lesion matures, it develops a characteristic appearance, often producing masses of conidia in the center of the spot, which may appear as pink or orange pustules. Affected pods may rot, losing their marketability, while defoliation weakens the overall structure of the tree.
The development and spread of Colletotrichum theobromicola are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as humidity and rainfall. Water droplets facilitate the dispersal of spores from diseased tissue to healthy surfaces. Warm temperatures combined with high humidity create an ideal environment for spore germination and infection, often leading to rapid outbreaks during the rainy season.
Managing this disease requires a multifaceted integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Regular pruning to increase airflow and sunlight penetration within the tree canopy.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected pods and plant debris.
- Maintaining optimal plant density to prevent humidity pockets.

- Breeding and selecting varieties with inherent field resistance to anthracnose.
