Colletotrichum trichellum is a fungal pathogen responsible for anthracnose, a prevalent and damaging disease that primarily affects ivy plants (Hedera species). This pathogen is classified within the Ascomycota and targets the aerial parts of the host, leading to significant physiological stress and aesthetic degradation.

The primary host range includes common ivy and various landscape cultivars used in vertical and ground-cover gardening. The fungus infects leaves, petioles, and stems, often exploiting wounds or natural openings in the plant tissue to initiate the infection cycle, especially in shaded and humid environments.

The clinical symptoms of the disease appear as distinct, circular or irregular spots on the leaves. Initially chlorotic, these spots soon turn brown or black, often with a darker margin. As the infection progresses, small, dark fruiting bodies known as acervuli develop within the necrotic tissue, eventually releasing conidia that serve as secondary inoculum.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of Colletotrichum trichellum. It thrives in high-humidity climates with moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Excessive overhead irrigation or poor air circulation within dense ivy foliage creates the persistent moisture films necessary for the fungal spores to germinate and penetrate the host tissue.

The damage caused by this pathogen includes premature defoliation and tip dieback, which can severely compromise the vigor of the ivy. Management strategies involve a multi-pronged approach: removing infected plant debris, improving canopy airflow, and applying appropriate fungicides such as copper-based formulations or systemic triazoles. Prevention through balanced irrigation and early intervention remains the most effective way to maintain plant health.
