Classified within the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex, this pathogen is characterized by its adaptability to high-temperature and high-humidity environments, making it a persistent challenge for farmers in tropical and subtropical regions.

The host range of Colletotrichum tropicicola includes coffee plants, papaya, various legumes, and greenhouse ornamental species. It causes systemic or localized infections, compromising the plant's ability to photosynthesize and effectively transport nutrients. The economic impact is significant, as the pathogen causes direct losses to yields and reduces the marketability of harvested fruits and vegetables.

The primary clinical signs of the disease are localized lesions that initially appear as water-soaked spots. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge and become necrotic, often developing a distinct margin. In moist environments, the production of conidia, visible as orange or salmon-colored masses, occurs within these lesions. Severe infections lead to leaf abscission, shoot dieback, and fruit decay.

Preventive strategies involve selecting resistant cultivars, implementing strict sanitation programs to remove infected debris, and managing irrigation to minimize leaf wetness. Fungicide application, focusing on active ingredients like copper compounds or strobilurins, should be scheduled based on environmental forecasts and symptom monitoring.
