Soybean anthracnose, caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum truncatum, is a major disease that significantly impacts soybean production globally. The fungus is highly destructive and can affect the plant at any growth stage, ranging from seedling blight to late-season stem and pod decay, leading to substantial yield losses.

The host range is primarily focused on soybean crops, though other legumes can also serve as reservoirs for the pathogen. The fungus overwinters in infested crop residues, infected seeds, and occasionally in the soil. Its ability to persist in the field environment makes it a persistent challenge for producers in areas with intensive soybean cultivation.

Symptoms typically manifest as dark, sunken lesions on stems, pods, and petioles, often characterized by the presence of small, black, hair-like structures known as acervuli. Infected pods often show poor seed development, resulting in discolored, shriveled, and light-weight seeds. Premature leaf drop and wilting are also common indicators of a severe infection in the field.

The development of Colletotrichum truncatum is heavily favored by warm, humid conditions with frequent rainfall. Rain splash serves as the primary mechanism for spore dispersal from lower leaves to the upper canopy. Once an infection is established, the high humidity within the crop canopy allows the fungus to spread rapidly across the field.

Economic damage is caused not only by yield reduction but also by the degradation of seed quality, which can impact germination rates and subsequent crop stand. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential to mitigate these risks. Farmers are encouraged to use high-quality, treated seed and practice crop rotation to reduce the primary inoculum load in their fields.
