Vietnamese anthracnose is a destructive plant disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum vietnamense. This pathogen is a significant concern in plant pathology, particularly affecting crops in tropical and subtropical regions, where it compromises the health and yield of various horticultural and plantation species.

The host range of Colletotrichum vietnamense includes several economically important plants such as coffee, citrus, and various fruit trees. The fungus acts as a hemibiotroph, initially colonizing living tissues and subsequently killing them, which leads to necrotic lesions on fruits, stems, and leaves.

The main symptoms and signs of infection include the appearance of dark, sunken spots or lesions on the surface of the plant tissue. In humid conditions, these spots develop orange or salmon-colored masses of conidia (spores) in the center, which are diagnostic features used by agronomists to identify the infection in the field.

Conditions for development and spread are highly dependent on moisture and temperature levels. The pathogen thrives under warm, humid environments, especially during the rainy season or in areas with heavy dew. Water splash and high humidity facilitate the dispersal of spores from the fruit bodies to neighboring healthy parts of the plant or nearby plants.

Measures for protection and prevention require an integrated approach. The most effective methods include the rigorous pruning of infected branches, the use of disease-free planting material, and the application of fungicides, particularly those containing mancozeb, copper compounds, or systemic triazoles. Proper plantation management, such as maintaining good airflow and drainage, is crucial to suppress the epidemic growth of this fungal disease.
