The causative agent of violet anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum violae-tricoloris. The disease significantly impacts the aesthetic value and physiological health of violets.
The primary host plants include various species of the genus Viola, particularly ornamental garden varieties. The fungus targets plants grown in both outdoor garden beds and greenhouse environments. Young plants are particularly susceptible, as a severe infection at the seedling stage often leads to systemic collapse and mortality.
Initial signs of the disease are characterized by small, circular, or irregular brown spots appearing on the leaves. As the pathogen matures, these spots expand, often developing a darker, well-defined margin. Under high humidity, the centers of these lesions may develop masses of light-colored or pinkish spores, confirming the diagnosis of an anthracnose infection.
