The Oak-loving collybia (Latin Collybia dryophila, recently reclassified as Gymnopus dryophilus) is a common fungal species belonging to the Marasmiaceae family. While primarily recognized as a saprotrophic fungus involved in leaf litter decomposition, it can occasionally act as an opportunistic pathogen in weakened tree stands.

The causal agent is the fungal mycelium that spreads through the soil. The resulting pathology is often characterized by root and butt rot. The fungus exploits existing wounds or physiological stress in host plants, leading to a breakdown of woody tissue through enzymatic activity.

The primary hosts include various deciduous trees, particularly oaks, as well as several conifer species. Young saplings in forest nurseries are particularly vulnerable due to high planting density and soil conditions that favor mycelial expansion across the root zone.

Symptoms of infestation include the presence of fruit bodies at the tree base, foliage chlorosis or wilting, and gradual dieback of the root system. As the rot progresses, the structural integrity of the lower stem is compromised, increasing the risk of windthrow and wood decay.
