Description
Colpoma refers to a genus of ascomycete fungi that cause necrotic diseases in the bark and branches of various woody plants. These pathogens act by colonizing the bark tissue, eventually disrupting the flow of nutrients and causing local or systemic dieback in the host plants.
The disease primarily targets deciduous trees, such as oaks, as well as certain conifers. It typically manifests on trees that have been previously stressed by environmental factors like drought, frost, or physical damage, which creates entry points for fungal spores to settle and germinate.
Symptoms of Colpoma infection include the appearance of characteristic fissures in the bark, accompanied by discoloration and tissue death. Over time, the fungus develops dark, elongated fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which rupture the bark surface to release spores into the surrounding environment.
The spread of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Damp, cool conditions facilitate the production and dissemination of spores. Poor air circulation in dense forest stands or ornamental plantings significantly increases the rate of transmission, as the moisture allows spores to survive longer before infecting new hosts.
The impact of Colpoma on tree vitality can be severe if left untreated. It leads to the premature loss of branches and reduces the overall vigor of the tree, making it highly susceptible to secondary attacks by stem-boring insects or other wood-rotting pathogens that can cause further decline.
- Prompt removal and disposal of infected branches (sanitation).
