The disease is caused by the fungus Colpoma juniperi, an ascomycete that primarily attacks the bark of juniper branches. This pathogen acts as a facultative parasite, often targeting tissues that have been weakened by environmental stress, drought, or physical damage. The fungal development involves the formation of fruiting bodies that break through the bark, releasing spores into the environment to initiate new infection cycles.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are various species of the genus Juniperus. While healthy plants can sometimes resist the initial infection, those in high-density plantings or shaded areas with poor air circulation are significantly more susceptible. The fungus exploits micro-cracks in the bark, establishing itself and gradually colonizing deeper vascular tissues, which eventually compromises the plant's nutrient transport system.
