Coltricia is a genus of fungi within the Hymenochaetaceae family, commonly associated with the decay of woody plants. While many species are saprotrophic, some act as facultative pathogens, contributing to the development of root and butt rot in both coniferous and broad-leaved tree species in natural forest stands.
The pathogen causes a brown rot, which is a type of wood decay characterized by the breakdown of cellulose. Over time, this biological process leaves behind the lignin, resulting in brittle, cube-cracked wood that severely compromises the structural integrity of the tree, often leading to uprooting during strong winds.
Host plants typically include pine, spruce, and various oak species. The disease primarily targets trees that are already stressed by environmental factors, such as drought, nutrient-poor soil, or physical root injuries. These weakened trees become the primary hosts for the fungus, which spreads through their root systems.
The development of the fungus is heavily influenced by soil moisture and temperature. Spores are released from distinct, stalked fruiting bodies found at the base of infected trees or on decaying stumps. Once established in the soil, the fungal mycelium can persist for years, slowly colonizing adjacent roots through direct contact.
Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for maintaining forest health:
