Description
Coltricia perennis is a pathogenic fungus that primarily affects coniferous tree species, causing white pocket rot in roots and lower trunks. As a soil-borne pathogen, it acts as a necrotrophic parasite, often colonizing stressed trees in both natural forest ecosystems and commercial plantations.
The host range is predominantly focused on pine species, though it can also infect spruce and larch. The fungus thrives in forest environments where organic debris is abundant, as it can persist as a saprotroph before invading the root systems of nearby living trees, gradually weakening the host's vitality.
Visible symptoms of Coltricia perennis include chlorosis of the needles, sparse canopy, and general stunting of tree growth. The most reliable diagnostic feature is the presence of its fruiting bodies: tough, leathery, funnel-shaped caps with concentric zones, which appear in clusters at the base of the infected tree or on exposed roots during late summer and autumn.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of the disease include high soil moisture, poor drainage, and soil compaction. The fungus spreads via wind-dispersed spores and through root grafts or direct soil contact with infected organic material. Once established in a root system, the decay process is persistent and difficult to reverse.
The economic damage caused by this pathogen is significant, as it leads to tree mortality, increased susceptibility to secondary bark beetle attacks, and windthrow risks. Effective management strategies include:
- Sanitary removal of infected trees, including stump extraction.
- Implementing proper soil drainage to avoid waterlogging.
- Avoiding mechanical injuries to roots during silvicultural operations.
- Monitoring vulnerable stands to detect fruiting bodies early in the season.
