Comoclathris typhicola (synonym Pleospora typhicola) is an ascomycete fungus that acts as a pathogen primarily affecting plants of the Typha genus. This fungus causes significant leaf blight and necrosis, affecting the overall physiological condition of the host plant. It is widely recognized in ecological and agronomic studies as an agent responsible for premature senescence of cattail foliage.
The fungus targets cattails in both natural wetlands and cultivated areas where these plants are managed for decorative, ecological, or industrial purposes. By colonizing the leaf tissue, the pathogen disrupts the normal photosynthetic cycle, causing the host to weaken and become more susceptible to other environmental stresses. In severe cases, the entire aerial part of the plant can be compromised.
Symptoms typically manifest as elongated brown or dark necrotic lesions on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand and coalesce, leading to extensive tissue death. Small black fruiting bodies of the fungus often emerge on the necrotic surfaces, especially during late summer and autumn, which serve as the primary indicator for diagnostic identification of the pathogen.

High humidity and standing water on leaf surfaces are essential for spore germination and colonization. Dense, poorly ventilated stands of cattails create an ideal microclimate for the fungus to spread rapidly, especially during periods of warm and wet weather.

Sanitation is the most critical step; removing and destroying infected plant debris helps reduce the inoculum level for the following season. Maintaining proper plant spacing and ensuring good water circulation can also limit the moisture levels necessary for fungal proliferation. In controlled settings, registered fungicides may be used, though careful consideration must be given to the aquatic environment.
