Completoria

Completoria is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Entomophthorales that can manifest as a plant pathogen. While primarily recognized for their role as entomopathogens, certain species within this genus interact with plant tissues in a way that causes significant physiological stress and morphological damage to agricultural crops.

The causal agent, Completoria, functions by invading host tissues. The mechanism involves the penetration of fungal hyphae into the plant cells, leading to cellular degradation through the secretion of lytic enzymes. This process disrupts the plant's nutrient transport system and impairs the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage.

Symptomatology of the disease typically includes the development of irregular necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and sometimes fruits. Initially, these spots may appear chlorotic, but they quickly transition into dark brown or black areas. In severe cases, the infected tissue becomes brittle, leading to premature leaf drop and overall plant stunted growth.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of disease progression. Completoria thrives in high humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C. These conditions facilitate rapid spore formation and dispersal, allowing the pathogen to spread efficiently across a field via wind, rain splashes, or contaminated tools.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Prevention is key, involving field sanitation, the removal of plant debris that might harbor overwintering spores, and optimizing plant spacing to ensure adequate airflow and reduce surface moisture. Chemical control using broad-spectrum fungicides should be applied proactively when conditions favor fungal outbreaks.
