Description

The causative agent of the disease Conferticium insidiosum is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the group of imperfect fungi. This microorganism leads a parasitic lifestyle, attacking the vegetative parts of plants, which disrupts normal photosynthesis and general metabolism. The disease is classified as a focal spot disease capable of rapidly spreading across large areas of crops under favorable conditions.

Primarily, this disease affects a wide range of vegetable and ornamental crops, often encountered in members of the Solanaceae and Asteraceae families. The pathogen is capable of surviving in plant debris and the topsoil layer, making it extremely resistant to unfavorable periods and complicating complete control over its spread in infected areas.

The primary symptoms of infection include the appearance of small chlorotic spots, which eventually acquire a brown or dark hue with a characteristic halo. As the disease progresses, these spots merge, causing premature wilting and necrosis of the leaf blade. In cases of severe infection, stem deformation and stunted growth of the entire plant are observed, which critically affects the quality and yield of the harvest.

The development of the disease is triggered by a combination of high air humidity and moderately warm temperatures, which create ideal conditions for spore germination. The spread of infection occurs primarily through raindrops, irrigation water, as well as by wind or the transport of spores via agricultural equipment. Outbreaks occur most frequently in densely planted fields with poor air circulation.

For protection and prevention, a comprehensive approach involving agrotechnical and chemical methods is required:

  • Adherence to crop rotation, returning crops to the same location no earlier than 3–4 years.
  • Thorough removal and destruction of plant residues after the end of the season.
  • Use of resistant varieties and pathogen-free planting material.
  • Application of preventive fungicides when conditions favorable for pathogen development arise.
  • Ensuring optimal planting density to prevent excessive moisture accumulation.
