Conidiobolus obscurus is a specialized entomopathogenic fungus that plays a vital role in natural pest control within agricultural ecosystems. Unlike conventional plant pathogens, this organism functions as a biological regulator by targeting and infecting specific insect populations, primarily aphids, rather than damaging host plants.
The fungus primarily impacts various aphid species (Aphididae) which are notorious pests for cereal crops, orchards, and greenhouse vegetables. By reducing the density of these pests, Conidiobolus obscurus serves as a natural barrier to damage, minimizing the need for synthetic pesticide interventions in integrated pest management programs.
Infection symptoms begin when fungal spores land on the cuticle of an insect, germinate, and penetrate the host's body.
