The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Coniella castaneicola. It is a member of the Coelomycetes group, known for causing necrotic lesions on foliage. This fungal infection acts as a parasite on plant tissues, primarily targeting the leaves, where it disrupts the photosynthetic activity of the host plant.
The host range of Coniella castaneicola includes several broad-leaved trees and ornamental shrubs. It is most commonly documented on chestnut trees, rhododendrons, and various species within the Ericaceae family. The fungus tends to establish itself in environments where host plants are crowded or frequently exposed to moisture.
Symptoms typically begin as small, discolored spots that expand into necrotic lesions. These spots are often reddish-brown to dark brown and may be surrounded by a chlorotic halo.
