Description
Coniella granati is a significant fungal pathogen that primarily affects pomegranates, causing severe fruit decay and bark lesions. Classified as an ascomycete fungus, it poses a major threat to pomegranate orchards worldwide, often resulting in heavy yield losses if left uncontrolled during the growing season.
The disease targets the fruit at various stages of development, but it is particularly destructive as the fruits approach maturity. The fungus typically enters the fruit through natural openings like the calyx or through wounds caused by insects, birds, or mechanical damage during cultivation and harvesting practices.
Symptoms of the infection include the formation of dark brown or black sunken lesions on the fruit peel. As the pathogen colonizes the internal tissues, these spots enlarge rapidly. Eventually, small black pycnidia (fruiting bodies of the fungus) emerge through the epidermis of the fruit, releasing masses of spores that facilitate further spread.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the outbreak of this disease. High humidity levels, prolonged rainfall, and moderate to warm temperatures are ideal for the rapid germination of Coniella granati spores. Poor orchard sanitation, such as leaving mummified fruits on trees or the ground, provides a reservoir for the fungus to overwinter.
Effective disease management requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include keeping the orchard clean by removing and destroying infected plant material, ensuring adequate tree spacing and pruning to promote air circulation and reduce humidity. Additionally, the strategic application of appropriate fungicides during high-risk periods is highly recommended.
