Coniella vitis is a fungal pathogen responsible for specific leaf spot and fruit decay in grapevines. This disease, which can also be associated with Pilidiella diplodiella in scientific literature, targets various tissues of the plant. As a parasitic fungus, it thrives in environmental conditions that compromise the overall health of the vineyard if not managed properly.
The host range of Coniella vitis is primarily restricted to members of the Vitis genus. The infection can manifest on leaves, stems, petioles, and ripening clusters. The disease poses a particular threat to vineyards that lack proper aeration or those experiencing prolonged periods of wet, humid weather, which allows the pathogen to colonize the host tissues efficiently.
Symptoms typically include the appearance of small, brown to grayish necrotic spots on the foliage. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, and small black structures known as pycnidia develop on the necrotic tissue, which are hallmark indicators of the fungus. On the berries, the infection causes the fruit to develop sunken, discolored lesions, eventually leading to rapid shriveling and yield loss.
The progression of the disease is highly favored by high humidity and rain, which facilitate the dispersal of conidia (spores) across the vineyard. The fungus persists in the vineyard debris, such as fallen leaves, infected canes, and bark crevices. These reservoirs act as primary sources of inoculum, making sanitation a crucial aspect of managing the disease during the dormant season.
Management strategies must focus on minimizing moisture around the vine canopy and reducing primary inoculum. Practical control includes the rigorous removal and destruction of infected plant material and the application of fungicides during periods of high disease pressure. Improving canopy management through proper pruning and training techniques ensures adequate air circulation, which reduces the time the foliage stays wet and hinders fungal growth.
