Coniferiporia qilianensis is a destructive fungal pathogen primarily recognized for causing wood decay in coniferous trees. As a basidiomycete, this fungus efficiently degrades cellulose and lignin, leading to structural instability in the timber and significantly impacting the health of the entire forest stand.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are species of the genus Picea (spruce). The fungus acts as a wound parasite, entering the tree's internal structure through bark damage, broken branches, or frost cracks. Once inside, it colonizes the heartwood, slowly spreading throughout the trunk and compromising the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients.
Symptoms of an advanced infection include the presence of perennial sporocarps (fruiting bodies) emerging from the bark of infected trunks.
