Coniochaeta savoryi is a species of ascomycetous fungus belonging to the order Sordariales. Primarily known as a saprotrophic organism that colonizes decaying plant matter, it also acts as an opportunistic pathogen on weakened trees and shrubs. In agricultural and horticultural environments, it is often identified by the presence of small, dark fruiting bodies on woody substrates, indicating an active colonization process.

The causal agent is the fungal organism itself, which produces microscopic spores that facilitate its spread across nursery stocks and managed landscapes. This fungus typically targets plants that are already experiencing environmental stress, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or mechanical wounding. Once the protective barrier of the bark is breached, the fungus begins to colonize the xylem and phloem tissues.

Symptoms include the appearance of numerous minute, black perithecia (fruiting structures) on the bark or wood surfaces, often giving the area a speckled or dusty appearance. Affected tissues may exhibit discoloration, ranging from light brown to black, depending on the severity and duration of the infection. In advanced stages, one might observe dieback of branches, stunted growth, and a general decline in the plant's physiological vigor.
