Coniophora is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Boletales, widely recognized for causing brown rot in wood. The species Coniophora puteana, often called the cellar fungus, is the most common pathogen that attacks structural timber, leading to significant economic losses in agricultural infrastructure and building maintenance.

The disease is classified as brown rot. The fungus selectively degrades cellulose and hemicellulose within the wood, leaving the lignin behind. This process causes the wood to darken, shrink, and crack into cubical patterns, eventually resulting in total structural failure as the wood loses its mechanical integrity.

The fungus affects a variety of softwoods and hardwoods. In an agricultural setting, it poses a direct threat to wooden greenhouse components, structural beams in storage facilities, fencing, and wooden equipment exposed to environmental moisture. It thrives where wood is in contact with soil or masonry that traps dampness.

Development and spread of Coniophora are driven by moisture content and stable temperatures. The fungus requires a moisture level above 25-30% to germinate. Poor ventilation in sheds and warehouses creates the perfect microclimate for mycelial growth, which can spread rapidly throughout wooden components if the environment remains humid.

Effective management and protection against Coniophora involve a combination of structural engineering and chemical control. The following practices are essential for prevention:

  • Maintaining proper drainage to keep wood away from standing water or soil.
  • Applying professional wood preservatives (fungicides) to all exposed surfaces.
  • Ensuring adequate ventilation in barns, warehouses, and storage areas.
