The fungus thrives by invading the plant's vascular tissues and epidermis, often entering through wounds caused by pruning, environmental stress, or insect activity.

The most visible symptoms include the appearance of necrotic lesions, which initially manifest as small, discolored spots on leaves and canes. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge and often develop a characteristic target-like appearance. A defining diagnostic feature is the emergence of tiny, black, flask-shaped structures called pycnidia, which break through the surface of the infected tissue and release large masses of conidia spores.

The development of the pathogen is highly dependent on humidity and moisture levels. Rain-splashed spores are the primary mode of transmission within a plantation, as water droplets facilitate the spread and germination of the fungus. The disease thrives in dense, poorly ventilated conditions where high humidity prevents the foliage from drying, creating an ideal microclimate for the spores to germinate and colonize new tissue.

By causing systemic necrosis, the fungus reduces the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, stunts overall growth, and results in the premature death of branches or entire stems. Beyond immediate tissue damage, the infection renders the plant highly susceptible to winter injury and secondary opportunistic pathogens, leading to significant yield losses in commercial production.

Control of Coniothyrium blight requires a proactive management strategy focused on sanitation and chemical intervention. Growers should prune and destroy all symptomatic plant material to reduce the reservoir of inoculum. It is crucial to maintain proper spacing between plants to improve airflow and ensure that pruning is performed during dry conditions to avoid infection at the wound site. Preventive sprays with appropriate fungicides are recommended during the early growing season to protect healthy tissue from primary spore infections.
