Coniothyrium leaf spot is a fungal disease affecting various species of beautyberry (genus Callicarpa), caused by the pathogen Coniothyrium callicarpae. This fungus acts as a parasite on the aerial parts of the plant, causing necrosis in leaf tissues and occasionally affecting tender stems. It is a significant concern for nursery managers and gardeners maintaining ornamental collections.
The host range is primarily limited to plants within the Callicarpa genus. The fungus is host-specific in many environments, meaning it focuses its metabolic activity on colonizing the leaves and shoots of these specific shrubs. The impact is most noticeable during the active growing season, coinciding with the development of lush foliage.
Symptoms of the infection typically begin as small, discolored spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, turning brown or dark grey, and are often surrounded by a distinct halo or darkened margin.
