Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Coniothyrium concentricum, a pathogen belonging to the Coelomycetes class. It primarily manifests as a foliar blight, forming characteristic concentric zones on the leaves of host plants, which gave the fungus its specific scientific name.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are various species of Yucca. While often seen as a minor aesthetic issue, under favorable conditions, the infection can become systemic within the foliage, leading to premature leaf drop and a significant decline in the health and vigor of ornamental plantings.
Symptoms initially appear as small, tan-colored lesions that expand into circular or irregular spots. As the fungus matures, it produces numerous pycnidia, appearing as tiny, black, pimple-like structures within the necrotic tissue. These pycnidia release spores that serve as secondary inoculum during rainy weather.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease epidemiology. High humidity, poor air circulation, and overhead irrigation are the main drivers of infection spread. The fungus is well-adapted to survive in plant debris, making sanitation an essential practice for managing the disease in garden or landscape settings.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls include removing all infected leaves and ensuring adequate spacing to improve airflow. Chemical control involving copper-based fungicides or systemic triazoles can be effective if applied early in the infection cycle to prevent the further spread of spores.
