The primary clinical signs of the disease are localized lesions on the stems that often start as subtle discoloration. As the fungus colonizes the stem, the tissue turns brown or gray, and the development of pycnidia—small, dark fruiting bodies—becomes visible on the affected surface. The blockage of the vascular system prevents nutrients from reaching the top of the plant, causing wilting.

The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on high humidity and rainfall. The fungus utilizes moisture to facilitate the dispersal of spores from one stem to another.
