The genus Conocybe consists of small saprophytic mushrooms that are often found in lawns, pastures, and agricultural fields. While they do not directly infect living plant tissues, their dense mycelial growth can significantly disrupt the health and aesthetic quality of turfgrass and garden beds.

The primary agronomic issue caused by Conocybe is its role in forming fairy rings. This phenomenon occurs when the fungus consumes organic matter in the soil, creating a thick, water-repellent mycelial mat that prevents water and nutrients from reaching the plant root system, ultimately leading to localized drought stress.

Symptoms of colonization include the sudden emergence of small, fragile, cone-shaped mushrooms, particularly after significant rainfall or irrigation. Surrounding the fungi, one might notice either patches of chlorotic (yellowing) grass or, in some cases, a darker, overly lush green ring where nutrients are being released by decomposing organic matter.

Environmental conditions conducive to Conocybe development include high moisture levels, poor soil drainage, and an accumulation of thatch—decomposing organic debris on the surface. These fungi thrive in cool to moderate temperatures, making them a common sight during spring and autumn, particularly in soils rich in organic amendments.

Effective management requires a shift in maintenance practices rather than reliance on fungicides. Key strategies include improving soil drainage through core aeration, reducing thatch buildup via mechanical scarification, and managing irrigation to ensure the soil surface is not perpetually saturated, which discourages the spread of the fungus.
