In the context of agronomy, it is identified as a soil saprotroph that plays a role in the decomposition of organic matter, often becoming noticeable in fields and greenhouses under specific environmental conditions.
The organism is a soil-borne saprotroph that thrives on decaying organic material. While it is not typically considered a primary plant pathogen that kills crops, its presence can indicate an imbalance in soil microbiology. Dense growth of the mycelium can compete with plant roots for nutrients and water, occasionally leading to stunted growth in seedling stages.
It prefers habitats with high organic content, such as soils heavily amended with fresh compost, manure, or plant debris. Development is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures, typically ranging from 15°C to 22°C, which makes it a frequent inhabitant of damp greenhouse floors or neglected pasture areas.
