As a saprotrophic organism, its role in the environment is purely decompository. It does not attack healthy living plant tissues. Its presence is strictly linked to the accumulation of organic debris, such as thatch in turfgrass or rich humus in garden beds, which serves as a nutrient source for the fungal mycelium.
The primary symptom of Conocybe apala is the emergence of small, fragile, cone-shaped mushrooms with pale creamy or off-white caps. These appear rapidly following periods of high moisture or humidity. They often grow in clusters, disrupting the visual uniformity of lawns.
