Conocybe arrhenii

Conocybe arrhenii is a species of saprotrophic fungus that frequently appears on managed lawns and turf surfaces. While it does not act as a primary parasite of living plant tissue, it is considered a nuisance pathogen in turfgrass management because its presence compromises the aesthetic and functional quality of the turf, often signaling underlying problems in the soil ecosystem.

This fungus thrives by decomposing organic matter within the soil profile. It is commonly found in lawns where thatch—a layer of undecomposed plant debris—has accumulated. The fungal mycelium spreads through the thatch and upper soil layers, competing with turfgrass roots for moisture and nutrients, which can lead to localized dry spots and patchy growth.

The primary symptoms include the emergence of small, delicate mushroom fruiting bodies within the grass stand. These are often observed in clusters or patches after periods of rain. Affected areas may show signs of yellowing or stunted growth of the grass, and the soil beneath may become hydrophobic, making it difficult to maintain consistent turf hydration.

Development is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high soil moisture, poor drainage, and limited air circulation within the turf canopy. The fungus flourishes during periods of mild, wet weather, particularly in heavy soils that remain damp for extended periods. High nitrogen levels combined with thick thatch layers provide an ideal substrate for its colonization.

Effective management focuses on improving the growing environment to discourage fungal growth. Cultural practices are the most successful approach:

• Implement annual core aeration to reduce soil compaction and improve oxygen levels.
• Perform regular dethatching or scarification to remove the accumulation of dead organic matter.
• Adjust irrigation schedules to allow the soil surface to dry out between watering cycles.
• Monitor soil pH and ensure proper fertilization to maintain vigorous turf growth that can outcompete the fungus.
