The fungus predominantly affects species such as beech and hornbeam. It gains entry into the tree through mechanical wounds, frost cracks, or sites where the bark has been compromised. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deep into the sapwood, using the moisture and nutrients stored in the vessels for its rapid growth.
