Cookeina speciosa is a species of cup fungus belonging to the family Sarcoscyphaceae. Often noted for its vibrant, chalice-shaped fruiting bodies, it is primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, acting as a saprotrophic organism rather than a plant pathogen.

The fungus functions as a decomposer. It derives nutrients from decaying organic matter, such as fallen branches, dead logs, and forest floor litter. Because it specializes in breaking down dead tissue, it does not infect living agricultural crops or horticultural plants.

Symptoms of its presence include the growth of distinct, deep pink or bright red, funnel-shaped structures on rotting wood. These structures are reproductive organs (apothecia) that release spores into the environment to colonize other suitable dead substrates.

The development of Cookeina speciosa is heavily dependent on high humidity and warm temperatures. It flourishes in lush, damp environments where the decomposition of woody debris is rapid, playing a vital role in nutrient cycling within its natural forest habitat.
