Cophinforma blight is a fungal disease caused by species within the Cophinforma genus, which are known to act as opportunistic pathogens in various woody plants. These fungi frequently occupy the xylem and bark tissues, causing systemic issues that inhibit the plant's natural hydraulic conductivity and eventually leading to localized or generalized necrosis.
The host range for this pathogen primarily includes fruit-bearing trees, vines, and several ornamental woody species. The infection usually targets plants that are under physiological stress, such as those suffering from water deficit, heat stress, or mechanical wounding, making orchards and nurseries particularly vulnerable environments for this fungus to establish itself.
Clinical signs of the infection typically manifest as distinct cankers on the trunk or branches. These lesions are often accompanied by discolored, water-soaked bark that eventually turns dry and brittle. If the bark is peeled back, internal wood staining (necrosis) is usually visible, confirming the vascular nature of the colonization by the fungal mycelium.
