Description
The Coprinaceae family, commonly known as ink cap mushrooms, comprises fungi that act as saprotrophs in the soil. While they primarily decompose organic matter, their presence in agricultural systems, particularly in greenhouses and intensive cultivation areas, indicates an imbalance in soil health and poor management of organic fertilizers, which can negatively affect crop development.
The causal agents belong to genera such as Coprinus and Coprinellus. These fungi are characterized by the rapid deliquescence of their caps into a black, ink-like fluid during spore dispersal. As a fungal occurrence, they are considered soil-borne agents that thrive in conditions where excessive moisture and non-composted organic material create a highly competitive environment for the primary crops.
These fungi frequently impact greenhouse vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and mushrooms. In outdoor settings, they proliferate on poorly composted manure or straw. The primary damage involves competition for soil nutrients and oxygen, which can cause the root systems of cultivated plants to suffer, leading to reduced vigor and stunted growth.
Symptoms of infestation include the emergence of fungal fruiting bodies on the soil surface or around the base of plants, accompanied by a musty odor and visible browning of the root neck. Favorable conditions for spread include high relative humidity (above 80%), restricted air circulation in tunnels, and the presence of raw organic amendments that attract the fungal mycelium.
Management and prevention focus on strictly using fully matured compost and enhancing soil drainage. Regular cultivation or shallow hoeing of the topsoil improves aeration, which helps suppress mycelial growth. If fruiting bodies appear, they should be removed promptly before spore maturation. Adjusting irrigation cycles to prevent waterlogging is essential for effective control and long-term prevention.
