Description
Coprinellus truncorum, commonly referred to as the glistening inkcap, is a saprotrophic fungus from the Psathyrellaceae family. In the context of arboriculture and agriculture, its presence is rarely the primary cause of plant death, but rather a diagnostic indicator of underlying wood decay and compromised plant health.
This fungus typically colonizes deciduous trees, often appearing on the roots or bases of fruit trees that have already suffered from physical injuries or primary infections by other wood-rotting pathogens. It thrives by breaking down dead or dying lignified tissue, effectively accelerating the structural decline of the host tree.
The primary symptom is the emergence of dense clusters of small, fragile mushrooms around the base of a tree. While the fruit bodies are visible evidence of the fungus, they indicate that a significant internal rot has likely already established itself within the tree's vascular or structural system.
Development and spread of the fungus are favored by high humidity, moderate temperatures, and the availability of decaying wood. Spores are easily disseminated by wind or moisture, allowing the fungus to rapidly colonize new susceptible sites on stressed plants that are already undergoing physiological decline.
Management of areas infested with this fungus focuses on long-term prevention rather than direct eradication. Key measures include maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, avoiding bark damage, and performing surgical removal of any visibly decayed wood. Protecting the tree from physical stress is the most effective way to prevent the colonization of such wood-decaying organisms.
