In high-humidity environments, its mycelium can colonize the weakened tissues of crop plants, particularly those growing in containers or greenhouses.
The disease is caused by the fungal hyphae infiltrating the root systems or the base of the stems. It is classified as a rot-type disease, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the plant, leading to stunted growth or total plant death if the infection is not managed in time.
The crops most at risk include vegetable starts and ornamental plants raised in peat-based or compost-rich soils. The fungus thrives in warm, damp conditions where organic material is abundant. Poor soil drainage acts as the primary catalyst for the development and rapid spread of this fungus within a nursery environment.
