Description
Harefoot mushroom (scientific name Coprinopsis lagopus) is a common saprotrophic fungus belonging to the Psathyrellaceae family. While it is not a direct plant pathogen, it is often considered an unwanted guest in agricultural settings, particularly in greenhouses and industrial mushroom cultivation, where it consumes decaying organic matter essential for plant health.
The fungus functions as a decomposer, primarily targeting soils rich in organic matter. Its presence usually indicates poor sanitation or the use of incompletely composted materials. In agricultural systems, Coprinopsis lagopus does not attack living plant tissues but acts as a major competitor for nutrients in the soil, which can indirectly stunt the growth of young vegetable crops or seedlings.
Symptoms of its presence include the rapid emergence of fragile, grey-haired fruiting bodies on the soil surface. These mushrooms have a very short lifespan, undergoing autodigestion (deliquescence) to form an ink-like black fluid. If allowed to spread, the fungal mycelium can form a dense mat on the soil surface, effectively sealing it and preventing optimal gas exchange for the plant root systems.
The development of the harefoot mushroom is heavily favored by high moisture levels and high nitrogen content in the substrate. Temperatures between +20°C and +25°C create ideal conditions for its rapid sporulation. It frequently thrives in environments where organic waste has been poorly managed, as it colonizes damp, decaying plant material with high efficiency and speed.
Effective prevention and control measures focus on habitat management. Growers should prioritize the following strategies to keep Coprinopsis lagopus in check:
- Ensure thorough composting of all organic amendments before soil application.
- Implement proper steam sterilization or solarization of potting mixes.
- Improve air circulation within greenhouse structures to reduce localized humidity.
- Remove decaying debris from growing beds immediately to prevent colonization.
