The Dung inkcap (Coprinus sterquilinus) is a saprotrophic fungus frequently found in agricultural settings where organic fertilizers are heavily used. While it is not a primary plant pathogen, its presence in greenhouses and gardens is often a sign of imbalanced soil conditions. This fungus belongs to the family Agaricaceae and thrives primarily on decomposing organic matter, particularly fresh manure.
The development of this organism is triggered by the application of uncomposted or poorly fermented organic materials into the soil. It acts as an indicator species, highlighting areas where the decomposition process is occurring too close to the roots of the crops. High humidity and high nitrogen levels serve as the primary catalysts for its rapid growth, allowing the mycelium to spread quickly throughout the moist substrate.
The symptoms of colonization are characterized by the sudden emergence of small white mushrooms with distinct, cylindrical caps. As the mushrooms mature, they undergo a process known as deliquescence, turning into a black, ink-like liquid. This phase often confuses gardeners, who may mistake the rapid decay for a disease affecting the plants themselves, although the fungus is technically feeding on the decaying organic material.
The economic impact of the Dung inkcap is primarily indirect. The growth of extensive mycelium can lead to soil compaction and reduced oxygen availability for plant roots. Furthermore, the rapid breakdown of organic matter by the fungus may temporarily lock up nutrients or alter the soil pH, leading to chlorosis or stunted growth in young vegetables and decorative plants sensitive to root zone disturbances.
Effective management and prevention strategies focus on improving soil hygiene and horticultural practices:
- Ensure all manure used is fully composted and aged.
- Maintain proper drainage to prevent waterlogged soil conditions.
- Regularly rotate crops and aerate the soil to promote beneficial microbial activity.
- Disinfect greenhouse tools and surfaces to minimize spore spread.
- Use certified peat-based or sterile potting mixes for sensitive seedlings.
