Coprobia granulata is a species of fungus within the Pyronemataceae family. While it is primarily recognized as a coprophilous organism, commonly found growing on the dung of herbivores, it can occasionally appear in agricultural settings. Its presence is frequently associated with soil substrates that are rich in organic matter and retain significant moisture.
The fungus manifests as small, bright orange or yellow apothecia. From a pathological standpoint, Coprobia granulata is considered an opportunistic species. When high humidity and excessive organic residues are present, the fungus can colonize plant debris and, in some cases, infect plant tissue that is in direct contact with the soil, especially in weakened or stressed specimens.
Symptoms of the fungus include the presence of small fruiting bodies on the surface of stems or lower leaves. The surrounding plant tissue may show signs of discoloration or localized necrosis as the fungus consumes decaying organic material. While not always a primary parasite, its presence often indicates a high risk for the development of more damaging pathogenic fungal species.
Development and spread are driven by high environmental moisture and moderate temperatures. The fungus thrives in greenhouse environments where ventilation is poor and irrigation keeps the soil surface constantly damp. Spores are dispersed through irrigation splashing, air currents, or the movement of contaminated equipment and soil, making sanitation a critical factor in management.
Control and prevention focus on eliminating the conditions that favor fungal growth. This includes the use of fully matured, pathogen-free compost and ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow. Maintaining proper greenhouse hygiene, such as removing debris and sterilizing surfaces, is essential. If the fungal population becomes dense, application of mild fungicides or biological control agents can help stabilize the environment and protect plant health.
